The Balance of Vaaladur

Confined Chaos (1)

Trapped in Brigham

Scene Description

The city of Brigham is growing restless; its people growing desperate. Prince Horace’s plan is working exactly as expected. Nearly a month ago one of his armies surrounded the city. Horace’s army set up camp just outside the city walls, cutting the city off from the rest of world and from the resources it so desperately needed to sustain the existence within them. No one has been permitted to leave without being taken captive or killed and the only people who have gained entrance to the city have been spies, spies that have poisoned the city’s wells and corrupted many of Brigham’s leaders and politicians.

Food continues to dwindle at an alarming pace even with extreme rationing.  Rain water is collected and seems to be the only safe means of hydration but the storm clouds have not been overly cooperative. Hundreds died before the poison was discovered in the wells. To prevent disease, the bodies where burned in the city’s west-side. The plume of smoke gave Horace reassurance that his plan was working.

It is unbelievable that Brigham had become such a dark and hopeless place in such a short time. Brigham was a beautiful and bustling city, home to world-renowned artisans and well known for its craftsmanship of many fine wares from clothing to jewels to furniture; it was a city that had found artistry in its labor. Brigham is the largest non-port city in the region and home to over thirty-thousand inhabitants. The city grew and its walls were continually expanded. The middle class serve as a powerful force in Brigham. The rich aristocracy were in small numbers and their influence was less than in other cities. Many have made a good life for themselves in Brigham. But there are always those less fortunate and those that lead less honest lives. Over the past fifty years, what began as a small slum grew into an over-populated ghetto, ripe with foul play and crime. Regardless, Brigham was a gem of a city and despite its rotten parts still gleemed.

Very recently, the mayor, Ernest Mecklen, has fallen ill. In his absence his well-respected and strikingly beautiful daughter, Merna, has called upon the citizens to gather in mass in the city’s center courtyard for a public address.
